Social Network App for Climbers

Climbers didn't have a place built around their sport , general social networks buried climbing content under everything else, and existing forums had no way to show who was climbing nearby. Divtechnosoft built Upsurge from scratch: a React Native app organized around national and local Communities, a global feed, and direct messaging that today connects climbers across 100+ countries with over 10,000 active users.

About the Client

About Upsurge

Upsurge is a mobile-first social network built specifically for climbers, organized around Communities , national and local groups , plus a single global feed where climbers post, follow, and discover each other.

The app is free to use, and its pitch is simple: one place for climbers to find people to climb with, whether that's someone at their home gym or another climber on the other side of the world.

The Problem

Problem Statement

Climbers lacked a dedicated platform to connect with fellow enthusiasts, discover climbing spots, and share their experiences. Existing social networks were too generic and didn't cater to the climbing community's specific needs.

Before Upsurge, climbers relied on fragmented Facebook groups, gym noticeboards, and word of mouth to find partners or beta, making it difficult to connect outside their immediate circle.

Challenges

The Challenges We Solved

Four problems stood between Upsurge and a platform climbers would actually open every day.

Location-Based Discovery

Finding another climber or a climbing spot nearby needed genuinely useful geospatial search, not just a city filter , so results stayed relevant whether someone was searching from a busy urban gym scene or a remote crag with only a handful of local climbers.

Media Upload & Storage

Climbing content is almost entirely photos and video , send logs, beta clips, gym sessions , so uploads needed compression that kept the feed fast without visibly degrading quality on a small phone screen.

Community Moderation

A platform built around real names, real locations, and real meetups needed moderation tools that could catch problems early , safety carries more weight on a location-sharing app than it does on a typical content feed.

Scalability & Performance

Built to hold up as Upsurge grew from an invite-only beta to a public app used by climbers across multiple countries, without a rebuild once the current 10,000+ user base was reached.

Our Process

Our Development Roadmap

Building a social platform from concept to global launch.

3 weeks

Community Research

Interviewed climbers directly to understand how they currently found partners and spots, what generic social apps got wrong for the sport, and which features they'd actually use.

6 weeks

Backend & Infrastructure

Built the Firebase backend, including geospatial queries for nearby-climber search, cloud storage for media, and the real-time infrastructure behind feeds and messaging.

10 weeks

Mobile App Development

Built the React Native apps for iOS and Android , social feed, profiles, Communities, location-based discovery, and messaging , as a single codebase across both platforms.

3 weeks

Testing & Beta

Ran a closed beta with real climbing communities, then iterated on onboarding and discovery based on what people actually did in the app versus what they said they wanted in research.

Solution

Our Solution

Divtechnosoft built the complete mobile and backend system for Upsurge , native iOS and Android apps, backend APIs, the social graph, location-based matching, and the tools that keep the community usable as it grows.

The brief went beyond “build a social app” , it meant building Communities as a real organizing structure (national and city-level), not just a hashtag, so a climber in a small local scene could find their group as easily as someone in a major climbing hub.

Social Networking Features

Built the full social layer , profiles, feeds, follows, and the engagement mechanics that keep people coming back , tailored to climbing rather than adapted from a generic template.

Location-Based Discovery

Built the geospatial search that surfaces nearby climbers and climbing spots, and the Community structure that groups users by city and country.

Media Sharing

Built automatic compression and cloud storage for photos and video, so send logs and beta clips load quickly on a feed without eating a user's mobile data.

In-App Messaging

Built the real-time chat system climbers use to plan meetups, coordinate a session at the crag, or ask a local about current conditions.

Features

Key Features

Ten features carry the app from first open to daily habit, built around how climbers actually look for people and places to climb.

User Profiles

Profiles built around climbing specifics , experience level, interests, and achievements , rather than the generic bio-and-photo format most social apps default to.

Communities: National & Local

Join a national community or a city-based one to see posts, questions, and meetups relevant to climbers near you, alongside the global feed for everyone else.

Social Feed

A single feed for posts, photos, and video from across the community , the default view when someone opens the app.

Follow & Connect

Follow other climbers to build a network over time, the same way a user would on any social platform , but scoped entirely to people who climb.

Local Discovery

Find climbers and climbing events near you or at your home gym using location-based search , the feature most directly aimed at turning an online connection into an actual climbing partner.

Direct Messaging

Message another climber privately to organize a session, ask about conditions, or trade beta , without making the conversation public on the feed.

Media Uploads

Share photos and video with automatic compression and cloud storage, so a send from a phone at the crag posts as fast as a photo from a gym session.

Notifications & Alerts

Push notifications for likes, comments, direct messages, and nearby climbers , tuned to bring people back without turning into noise.

Privacy Settings

Granular controls over profile visibility and location sharing, since a location-based social app has different privacy stakes than a typical feed-only platform.

Admin & Moderation Tools

A moderation panel the Upsurge team uses to review reports and enforce community standards as the user base grows across new cities and countries.

Results

Results & Impact

The numbers at the top of this page aren't just a headline , here's what they mean for how climbers actually use the app.

A Community That Keeps Coming Back

An average active user opens the app 4 times a week, sharing 2 climbs and participating in at least 1 local community discussion.

Global Reach, Built on Local Groups

Over 50 active city-level Communities have formed, with the largest hubs in Denver, London, and Sydney driving daily meetups.

Built to Handle Real Media Volume

With automated media compression, users can upload high-quality videos from the crag in seconds, resulting in over 50,000 climbs shared with minimal storage costs.

From Invite-Only Beta to Public App

Starting from a closed beta of 500 local climbers, Upsurge has grown organically to over 10,000 active users across 100+ countries.

"Divtechnosoft didn't just build an app; they understood the climbing community. The location-based discovery feature completely changed how our users find partners, turning a fragmented network into a cohesive global community."

Learnings

What We Learned

Four things that shaped how we'd approach a niche, location-driven social app again.

Niche Communities are Powerful

A feed built entirely around one sport gets higher engagement than a general platform ever could, because every post is relevant to everyone who sees it.

Location Features Drive Value

The moment someone finds a climbing partner near them through the app, Upsurge stops being just a feed and becomes something they actually rely on.

Media Optimization is Critical

With a feed built almost entirely on photo and video, compression and load-time decisions affected retention as much as any feature did.

Platform Evolution

The scalable architecture built for Upsurge successfully validated our approach, directly enabling the rapid deployment of a similar community platform for mountain bikers.
